The Flow Stool by Kenneth Young

Sydney, Australia based designer Kenneth Young has created the Flow Stool.

Kenneth says:

‘Flow’ is a study into line and surface in relation to the human body. The overall aesthetic can be characterised by fluid and dynamic lines creating a modern, sleek and unique appearance. The leading leg which also functions as a temporary foot rest flows from the rear of the seat pan to the ground. The intent of this is to visually connect the lower back of an occupant to their feet while sitting on the stool. This creates an embracing aesthetic between the stool and occupant whilst maintaining an elegant and minimal design. The flowing brush strokes of Chinese calligraphy are also of influence to the design with combination of clean lines and dramatic changes in direction. Flow is constructed from laminated plywood and finished with a durable urethane coating. Plywood gives the design a vibrant and warm feel to compliment the dynamic lines of the stool.

Mini Capsule Hotel by Atelier Van Lieshout

Mini Capsule Hotel, a six-bed dorm by Atelier Van Lieshout, featured in an outdoor installation called Never-EverLand at Design Miami/Basel earlier this month.

Curated by Natalie Kovacs and presented by Carpenters Workshop Gallery, the installation was billed as a “dystopian/utopian garden of unearthly delights”.

Mini Capsule Hotel was bought by actor Brad Pitt (below), who apparently plans to install it on his private beach.

Above photos are by James Harris.

Here’s some text about Never-EverLand:

Never-EverLand curated by Natalie Kovacs at Design Miami/Basel and presented by Carpenters Workshop Gallery.

Never-EverLand was a dystopian/utopian garden of unearthly delights (a send up of the corporate VIP lounge/oasis) featuring Atelier van Lieshout’s Mini Capsule Hotel – which functioned as the place to be for a disco nap/to crash or to say you spent the night at ‘Brad’s’ after Pitt bought it.

The Mini Capsule Hotel was integral to Never-EverLand, offering visitors the opportunity of a 24 hour slumber party, playing on the themes of Peter Pan’s NeverLand and punctuating the exhibition of utilitarian sculptures (by CWG artists) by using Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch as a metaphor and precursor to the current economic situation.

‘Never-EverLand offers collectors the ultimate ‘design high’/wonderland in this sculptural playground for 24 hour party people. The Mini Capsule Hotel by Atelier Van Lieshout sleeps 6 couples, allowing people to crash sur-place.’ Natalie Kovacs, Curator.

Never-EverLand was the first in a series of design led initiatives to be hosted by Carpenters Workshop Gallery in collaboration with Kovacs to create an alternative canvas for design-driven dialogue.

‘Collaborating with Kovacs, from an alternative contemporary art perspective allows us to elevate the conversation using design as a sculptural rather than a decorative medium. We are evolving with the next generation of artists, such as rAndom International and presenting challenging and inspiring experiences, for example, their very Duchampian ‘Audience’ installation which proved to be a mind expanding crowd pleaser.’ Loic Le Gaillard, Partner, Carpenters Workshop Gallery.

‘Creating unforgettable encounters for our visitors is the goal, we really like to encourage the ‘What the F—k? factor, which is the reaction we’re getting from our exhibitions, we’re literally inspiring a ‘design high’’ Julien Lombrail, Partner, Carpenters Workshop Gallery.

Therefore the distribution of the plant is in three levels with the floor that contains the service area embedded half level, the main floor (living room and two bedrooms) half above of the arrival level.

And the first floor one level and a half from the ground level zero. It was firmed as broken a house it has visually led, with structure in steel with slim pillars painted in white. Big panels painted of white that articulates in the form that if has the maximum opening of the vain ones. Minimum of pillars, transparency in the level of the living room. This concept made possible the integration of the external and the internal. The construction was implanted in two blocks having defined two empty areas. One in the front of the construction with the garden of entrance and parking of cars. And other, the main one, with a great private internal garden contained by the blocks of the construction. Fluidity of the circulation of the people always through catwalks, with no limits, no walls. What it provides a playful environment where what always circulates sees indistinctly the other spaces. To always prolong ate the final specification is synthetic with practically three or four materials, more basically the use of marbles (room, kitchen and garden) and wood in the rooms.
