alain gilles: connectivity island
June 8, 2009
french designer alain gilles created the ‘connectivity island’ bench and planters based on combinatory logic.
the series is formed from identical elements allowing the user to design their own arrangement. the principle
of similarity is also utilized in the moulding of the pieces in concrete. despite their opposite functions,
the benches and planters use many of the same mould parts. the simple angular design of the pieces allows
them to be combined in many arrangements. both pieces are made of concrete and can be produced in
different colours.
