Helga Mogensen and Berglind Gunnarsdóttir at DesignMarch

Jewellery designer Helga Mogensen and interior designer Berglind Gunnarsdóttir exhibited a collection of jewellery featuring miniature furniture at DesignMarch in Reykjavik, Iceland, last week.

Mogensen’s jewellery pieces, comprising materials including fish skins and drift wood, were arranged on a display by Gunnarsdóttir that was made of salvaged furniture.

The project was part of an event where 30 product designers created installations for the DesignMarch festival in recently abandoned spaces on Laugavegur, the city’s main shopping street.

Here’s some text from the designer:

Helga & Berglind at DesignMarch

Jewellery designer Helga Mogensen and interior architect Berglind Gunnarsdottir collaborated on an installation for the Icelandic DesignMarch. Inspired by similar ideas about space, but at different scales, and passion for recycling; the duo’s playful installation was mainly made from worn out furniture picked up from the local recycling centre. For the final outcome, they wanted to extend various ideas from Helga’s jewellery and sketchbooks into a larger scale object.

Helga’s body of work reflects a strong relationship with her family and their special retreat in the countryside of Iceland, were her connection with that place and its significance in her life is represented through her use of driftwood and fish skin.

“Overall, my work suggests small things that are of great importance to me and therefore represent an honest pursuit to personalize my work through the truly meaningful things in my life.” says Helga.

“I read somewhere that the work most personal to the maker also tends to be the work that people will be most interested in. Personally, I feel, this is as it should be, and the only way it could be. The nature of symbols and drawings which have influenced my attempts over the past several years are personal and therefore come through in my body of work as such.” says Helga.

Helga Mogensen graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2007 from the Jewellery and Silversmithing department. Since then she has been exhibiting her work, in the U.K and also in Iceland.

Berglind Gunnarsdottir graduated from the University of Brighton, School of Architecture and Design, in 2006. Since then she has been working in an architecture & design studio in Iceland.
